Last Friday Jason and I said bye (he calls it 'see you later') to our families as we boarded our flights to good 'ole Deutschland. It was my first time leaving Knoxville and my family for more than 5 weeks ever in my life. Hard to believe, right? What's even harder to believe is that it was about Jason's 1000th time. He says it doesn't get easier, but you get more used to it. I hope I don't ever get used to it. No matter where God and your life is taking you, saying goodbye to the most important people in your life is HARD! After thoroughly snotting all over my mom and dad, sister, and Jason's dad, it was time to start our really big adventure.
p.s. remind yourself to ask me about the bad-A plane we flew on from Philadelphia to Munich. I will never have another flight so great, I am convinced.
We eventually got to our apartment in Bamberg around noon on Saturday. I felt like I'd never left. I didn't even think about unpacking until Sunday. I had bigger plans in mind for the new Stewart family...
...like getting a Christmas tree and putting it up! We had to drive about 1.5 hours (or so we thought) to Graf, a post much bigger than where Jason is stationed. (example: Graf has a legitimate mall, including a food court and something you could equate to a super Walmart; Bamberg has a Burger King, a Subway in our gas station, and a store that is something like an abandoned Dollar General) Anyways, it turns out, yesterday while we were waiting around on my phone to get activated, we found a Christmas shop in Bamberg with everything we'd bought in Graf right on the shelves. Hey, you win some, you lose some. I kid about Bamberg's post being small and lame, but truthfully, it is enough for us and luckily anything we will ever need is not too far away!
With help from JB, we got a box shortly after the tree was set up (did I mention it's a European plug and therefore, in no way reusable to us haha...I love Germany) full of ornaments and other Christmas decorations! I love getting packages, even when I know exactly who they are from and what is in them. (sidenote: we are expecting plenty more boxes from Barbee Lane in the coming weeks. You all would not BELIEVE how much stuff I forgot!) Needless to say, it's starting to look a lot like Christmas around here. :)
This week has been a whirlwind of unpacking, trying to find space in a closet-less apartment for my belongings, filling out paperwork, getting passport pictures taken, waiting in lines worse than the U.S. Post Office to get a new passport (still don't have it), studying for my German driver's license, trying to learn how to be a wife and a housewife at that, and learning how the heck you use an iPhone. It's a lot of adjustment at once, but I'm really ready to do this! So many adventures await the Stewarts...and I could not be more excited about it!
p.s. the Christmas markets are open in Germany and it's so beautiful! As soon as I get decent pictures, I will post.
p.p.s. Germany is so cold.
